Working with the actors of SA Casting has shown me again and again how powerful a portrait can be. When I photograph actors, the images sometimes begin to feel like stills from a film. You’re not just looking at a face, you’re seeing the beginning of a story or a sudden shift in character that makes you curious about what happens next.

Actors don’t always need to look beautiful. In fact, the strongest emotions rarely are. Intense laughter, fear, rage, grief, these expressions can be raw, strange, even uncomfortable. But that’s exactly where the beauty of working with actors lives. Their face becomes an instrument. When an actor is truly present in the moment, you begin to feel it too. Even through a still image, you start to empathise with a person and a story that may not even fully exist yet.
